Project: Paper Mill Solid Waste Landfill Anti-Seepage Project For Región del Biobío, Chile

Starting Date: June 16, 2024
Chile’s Región del Biobío aimed at acquiring an anti-seepage liner of world-class quality for their municipality’s solid waste landfill. In this way, this project must meet strict protection requirements of the groundwater nearby. In addition, the products for this project should perform well to contain the byproduct wastes for a long time. As a part of the very project, Smooth HDPE Geomembrane liners and other related products formed a functional and durable lining system. Therefore, the impermeability and strength requirements can last 3 years or even longer till 2027.

Solution From Xinyu Geosynthetics
The landfill liner core was composed of Smooth HDPE geomembrane along with geosynthetic layers for reinforcement, drainage, and filtration. The implementation of the newest welding technology provided a watertight and seamless joint. The items employed were depicted as follows:

Implementation
Pristine 1.5mm thick smooth HDPE geomembrane was laid on the slopes of the landfill and 158,000 m² was promoted to be the first permeation layer. Geonets and composite drainage nets were permitted for draining leachate, high-resistance filtration drainage boards, and non-woven geotextile for stabilizing soil and effective water management. Instead of the rough terrain, double-locking edges GCL could be used to ensure the secondary level of sealing protection which in turn was required by the hazardous waste profile in the area.
Results: Post-construction testing indicated that ground water quality was unaltered ensuring zero leakage.
Durability: The equipment didn’t underperform during the region’s bad rains and earthquake-like circumstances that lasted for six months.
